Hi All! Today is a great day because I have another Quilt Reveal for you! This one was not actually pieced by me, but pieced by my mom! She use a Stitch and Flip piecing technique and created this wonderfully scrappy quilt top.

How the Project Became Mine

Funny Story.

My sister and I live in Upstate New York, and grew up on the Seacoast of New Hampshire. For my sister’s birthday last year she went home to visit Moms.

The day she was driving home she calls me up and tells me she has a present for me and she’s stopping by the house on her way back to her place.

When my sister gets here, she gives me this plastic shopping bag of quilt chaos with a mostly finished quilt top and a mess of fabric balled up to match. She tells me, “Mom said you can finish it for her for her Christmas gift this year”

I pull it out and it is a super scrappy stitch and flip (not quite finished) quilt top.

Oooookay. Well I’ve got it now. Might as well. Thanks for the subtle gift hint Mom haha.

Sidebar: Never heard of a stitch and flip pieced quilt? I hadn’t either until I got this quilt top. It’s an easy piecing technique for beginners because you don’t have to worry about corners matching up or your cutting being absolutely perfect.

My First Client Quilt

Cool so now I’ve got this quilt top that someone else trusted me to quilt. Look at me! I’ve got a client!

So I call up Moms and I ask her what she sees this quilt looking like when its all done.

She tells me that she doesn’t want me to take copious amounts of time doing anything fancy. Just put the borders on (that don’t currently exist and may or may not have enough fabric for) and do an all over quilting design.

Well this is very early in my quilting career and I’m all about trying new free motion quilting techniques and patterns to practice. So I decided to go all out any way and custom quilt it.

Its for moms, and a Christmas gift that was handmade by her oldest daughter. No matter what I turned up with she was going to love it.

Not to mention she didn’t give me much of an option in taking on the project to begin with, so I might as well get something out of it.

Now How On Earth Do I Quilt A Stitch and Flip Quilt?

After mulling it over for a few days, I decided I wanted to quilt each fabric as its own.

I went with a sort of Dot-to-Dot quilting technique and really just echoed the shapes in the piecing.

And after I got two blocks in I realized a not-so-secret quilting technique that was a gamechanger for this quilt. Check out my Lessons Learned article for this quilt to find out what my silly Ah-Ha moment was.

I think the final product ended up awesome. I wanted to make sure I didn’t do anything elaborate because the quilt was already very busy visually. Straight lines were my friends so the quilting didn’t compete with the fabrics.

I did however want to do something a little fun on her larger border. I liked how the fabric looked when quilted from the pieces that were in her scrappy blocks so I knew something fancier wouldn’t get washed out by the fabric pattern.

Just a little bit of quilted triangles but it really gave a nice orderly look to her otherwise busy quilt and came out just beautifully.

Chaos contained by a little organization.

And on Christmas? She absolutely loved it. Well worth the time I put into it.
