When you need a new quilt pattern or want to learn a new quilting technique, one of the best and quickest places to go is to the internet!

Quilting blogs all over the internet often have amazing tips and tricks for something you might be struggling with and they often write their own patterns giving you an amazing variety of quilting patterns that you may not be able to find in your local quilting/fabric store.

But how to find these great blogs?

Today I’m running down my favorite go-to blogs for everything under the sun related to quilting, my 21 favorites for 2021.

What are quilters blogging about today?

Different quilters have different interests when it comes to the content they post on their blog.

Most will focus on a certain topic, but in general, you can find a variety of the following things:

  • Free Quilt Patterns
  • Patterns for Purchase
  • Quilting Tutorials
  • Online Classes for Quilting
  • Piecing Tips
  • Machine Quilting Tips

These are just a few of the more popular areas you’ll find however, if you are interested in learning something, someone is likely blogging about it somewhere.

So where do we find all of these blogs?

I’ve broken down my go-to quilting blogs below by categorizing them so you can jump to exactly what you are looking for.

Modern Quilting Blogs

Then Came June

If you love bright colored modern quilts, Then Came June will be your new favorite.

Meghan Buchanan the creator and maker behind Then Came June states that her favorite personal designs are the patterns that are fast to finish with fun movement in the block designs.

When you visit her blog, it is immediately clear that regardless of the skill level of your pattern, all quilts are pieces of art.

Meghan also offers different fabric bundles that you can purchase to go with your pattern to get your creative juices flowing.

Lots to check out, see Then Came June here!

Sewn Handmade

Maybe you are more of a minimalist in your quilt pattern preferences?

Sewn Handmade recently released a whole collection of modern minimalist quilt designs that were each designed with a different room of the house in mind.

Many of Amy’s quilt designs lean towards a neutral color palette and often plenty of negative space that give a very calming feeling.

While Amy has been focusing hard on her release of the Sewn Home series this past year, the blog portion of her website has many tutorials and smaller projects to try for free!

Check out Sewn Handmade here!

Quilty Love

I’ve been following Emily Dennis at Quilty Love for a while now and there is one thing I am absolutely certain:

This woman never stops sewing!

And that is never a bad thing 😉

Emily comes out with many new quilt patterns each year, and with each one you can see how much fun Emily has picking out the color schemes.

While almost all of her designs are block based, the styles of blocks come in all different variations. From scrappy blocks to organized layouts, its tough not to find your next quilt pattern here.

And if for some reason you don’t, you’ll definitely find inspiration.

Emily recently released a few online courses to help you turn your quilting addiction into a full fledged online business so if you’ve every thought about profiting from all of this sewing machine time, definitely check out Emily’s courses.

Visit Quilty Love here.

Homemade Emily Jane

Ever started a quilt and just immediately wish you could skip the cutting process and go right to the sewing?

Emily at Homemade Emily Jane has the answer.

Accuquilt is a die cutting machine made for fabric that will help you cut all of your quilting pieces incredibly accurately, and more importantly, not by hand.

The accuracy of your cutting has the potential to affect how easily a quilt is made and when you are working with a pattern that requires a special shape in it’s blocks, it can be very tedious to cut each one out by hand.

In addition to her accuquilt tutorials, Emily also has many other quilting tutorials and tips on her blog that will keep you busy learning new techniques and polishing those skills.

Check out Homemade Emily Jane here!

Alderwood Studio

With a tag line of “Modern Quilts for Modern Life” its not a huge shock what you find when you get to the website.

Chock full of modern and sometimes even abstract designs, Amber from Alderwood Studio definitely seems to lean more towards the geometric designs, some block based, others not.

If you’re here to learn as opposed to shop though, Amber’s blog is definitely on point and a top space to check out.

Many quilters use their blog section to display their finished works and show off their patterns, but sometimes that’s all that’s there.

With Alderwood Studio, you’ll find tutorials, free patterns, and tips and tricks to help you in your quilting journey.

She recently came out with a series called Sewing Space where she looks at different areas of your sewing area to help you make the most out of whatever space you have.

I went over to check out the blog and found myself immediately reading everything she already had released in the series.

Amber also offers Modern Makes quilting subscription box that contains monthly projects “designed to inspire, teach, and challenge”. So if you ever wanted even MORE quilting in your life be sure to check it out.

Head to Alderwood Studio here.

Wren Collective

I love looking at the Wren Collective instagram profile feed. Rachel does an amazing job not only showing off her quilts and projects, but staging them in just the prettiest photos at the same time.

If you are looking for some quilty inspiration, check her instagram feed out here @wren.collective

When you look at Rachel’s collection of quilt patterns in her shop, you can quickly tell she loves a large feature design in a quilt.

If you create large block based quilts that require 100+ blocks for one project, you know that after a while, creating the same block over and over again can prove tedious.

Choosing a larger pattern quilt design typically comes together much quicker which gives you the quick wins that keep up your quilting mojo between larger more involved projects.

Wren Collective has some awesome designs that I’ve been seeing all over social media lately. Rachel recently released her Aftershock quilt pattern, and it has quickly made its way on to my quilting bucket list.

Check out Wren Collective here and see what else Rachel has to offer!

Cotton and Joy

There is something about the modern quilt patterns that Cotton and Joy releases that are just so clean feeling.

Polished with clean lines, and color combinations that are just so perfectly selected, Fran does an amazing job with her designs and her actual quilting.

She recently released a new pattern Cabin Valley that I’ve been eyeing for weeks!

In addition to her patterns for sale, Fran also has many tutorials and free patterns available on her blog to give you great tips and tricks when completing her designs.

Check her out at Cotton and Joy here!

White Plains Quilts

The White Plains Quilts website is quite new compared to some of the more regulars on this list, however regardless of the age, the talent shows through!

Brittany at White Plains quilt had a lot of background testing quilts and designing quilts before starting a website for them, so even with a smaller amount of reading content on the site, the quilting and photography are just as amazing as you’d expect from any blog on this list.

Brittany has a lot of super fun themed quilts displayed on her blog for holidays and seasonal display in the form of some halloween pumping picking as well as Christmas tree shopping quilts.

Many of her quilts take on a kaleidoscope feel to them which I always find impressive to do. The colors have the ability to make or break a quilt like that and Brittany has many amazing examples of how to do it well.

Check her out at White Plains Quilts.

Quilting and Crafting Blogs

Coral + Co.

Coral + Co. is a rather large blog that specializes in almost anything that involves a sewing machine.

Shelly originally started Coral & Co with tutorials on how to make baby clothes, hats, and more and over time started focusing on quilts as well.

She has many super cute and quick projects for baby headbands, as well as free quilt patterns available.

If you are a lover of all things sewing, and have some new babies in the family, Coral + Co. is the place to head.

You can find all of her sewing tutorials here!

Hailey Stitches

Hailey Stitches is a newer blog on the scene, but her YouTube channel is quickly building and becoming a great place for anything quilting and cross stitching. Hailey does a lot of work on YouTube however, she also writes a detailed blog post to be paired with any cross stitch or quilting video she makes.

My parents could tell you in a heartbeat, cross stitching is near and dear to my heart as it was my “gateway” sewing craft of choice when I was young, so I love keeping up with a blog that features projects of both crafts.

Hailey does an amazing job showing off the progress on her current cross stitch projects as well as offering plenty of great tips and tricks for her quilting projects.

Youtube is not generally my platform of choice, I typically prefer to read instead of watch, however, of the (very) short list of channels I follow on Youtube, Hailey has quickly become one that I follow regularly.

Be sure to check out Hailey Stitches here!

Great Heron Thread Co

A little bit of embroidery and a lot a bit of quilting, Great Heron Thread Co has tons to offer!

Browsing through their blog section the first 4 out of 5 posts are tutorials on different quilted projects, by keeping an eye on this one, you’ll find lots of free projects to keep your weekends busy.

Great Heron Thread Co specializes in making kits and fabric bundles to inspire you to get into the sewing room and create that next project.

If you use pretty fabric, it’s bound to get finished (at least that’s how I think about it!)

From bright and fun to warm and moody, the diversity in fabric bundles you’ll find in this small fabric store is amazing.

Great Heron Thread Co likes to use their blog to show you all of the different ways you can use their fabric bundles to make super fun and cute projects. While you don’t necessarily need to buy the fabrics here, the tutorials are still great quality!

There’s tons of pretty things here, be sure to check out Great Heron Thread Co.

Quilting Blogs for Beginners

Lo and Behold Stitchery

Holy puff quilts, they are amazing and luxurious, and Brittany from Lo and Behold Stitchery has perfected the art of the ombre puff quilt so you can make your own.

Lo and Behold Stitchery is an amazing modern quilting blog that consistently comes out with amazing new patterns that you won’t likely find anywhere else and even provides all the resources you could need to make your perfect version of their patterns.

In addition to the many quilting resources and patterns that Lo and Behold Stitchery offers, periodically throughout the year, enrollment opens for their Beginner Quilting Academy!

I am the first person to promote online learning in any form, and my favorite form of learning is through courses.

There are a few online courses on this list so if you are in the market, Brittany goes into detail on her course here.

Southern Charm Quilts

With a big following on instagram, Southern Charm Quilts is not only an online fabric store, but also a pattern (and book!) writing quilter.

You can immediately tell that Melanie Traylor loves quilting and teaching other to quilt the second you get to her website Southern Charm Quilts.

She has broken out her tutorials as well as her “Deep Dive” section of her website so they are front and center right in her navigation bar so they are easy to find.

The deep dive section offers lots of popular quilting topics that you may want more information about, or have so much to talk about, it’s easier to spread it out across multiple articles.

Melanie makes it super easy to find the information on the techniques you are looking for without having to dig in her archives for past posts.

She recently released her new books on quilts called A Life With Quilts where she includes a bunch of her different written patterns as well as including her pro tips on her favorite methods and techniques for completing them.

Want to learn more? Check out A Life with Quilts here.

String and Story

Fun fact, the word “quilting” actually refers to the top stitching on a quilt, not the patchwork of colors that makes up the design of the quilt top.

Many quilters love making their quilt tops, but prefer to not do the quilting of the quilt layers. Instead many quilters prefer to opt out and hire a professional quilter instead.

HollyAnne Knight from String and Story is ALL about the free motion quilting and is one of those professional quilters that many reach out to to finish their quilts.

The downside to hiring someone is that it can be expensive! HollyAnne’s blog is chocked FULL of beautiful free motion quilting and tips on how to do it successfully on your own at home, so you can save yourself the money and complete your quilt entirely from start to finish.

She offers a few different courses that you can take to refine your free motion skills, Intro to FMQ as well as Free Motion Quilting Academy. If learning how to do your own free motion quilting is on your crafting bucket list, HollyAnne at String and Story is a fantastic way to get started.

Quilters Candy

Quilter’s Candy, originally Quilter’s Candy Box, started out as a subscription box for quilters and over time has morphed into a membership for the quilting community that provides its members with exclusive patterns, a community to share the hobby with, as well as many other quilting resources.

Elizabeth Chappell, the owner of Quilter’s Candy not only has tons of great free tutorials for different projects, but also run a couple of different courses throughout the year for you to learn how to turn your craft into a business you can actually live on.

On the quilting side of things she offers the course Write and Sell Quilt Patterns to learn how to make your own patterns and then profit on them, and for the business side of things, she offers her Craft to Career Business course which is not necessarily strictly for quilting, but any creative craft based hobby you might have!

Elizabeth also recently launched her coordinating podcast of the same name Craft to Career Podcast where she interviews creative contributors from all over the crafting community to share how they started their business, initial struggles, business models, and much more.

If you have ever considered launching a business out of your crafting addiction I highly recommend Elizabeth’s Craft to Career Podcast.

You can find all the information in the world on how to start a business fairly easily online but learning how to start a craft based career (the right way) can be much tougher as there are just so many different ways to start a business.

The podcast is free to listen to so if you’ve ever been interested in starting a business, definitely be sure to check out Quilter’s Candy.

This Mountain Life

If you’ve seen Jillian from This Mountain Life on Instagram, she’ll likely already have you laughing at her many posts that make light of the struggles of quilting that 10/10 quilters can relate to haha.

Jillian is a modern quilt pattern writer who is a big advocate for self care in quilters.

Quilting is a hobby, and when you start setting your bar too high, or comparing your first or second quilt to someone else’s 200th quilt, you can often get yourself discouraged causing your projects to take significantly longer to finish.

This Mountain Life not only provides resources on how to keep the hobby a hobby, regardless of your skill level, but also lots of tutorials and free downloadable projects to keep your quilting life full to the brim!

Check out her super funny instagram posts here @this.mountain.life

Quilting Blogs with free patterns

Penelope Handmade

Plot twist: Penelope Handmade is not actually run by a Penelope, but a Jennifer!

Named after her Great-Grandmother Penelope, Penelope Handmade is the corner of the internet where Jennifer posts all of her wins, details, and quilt finishes on her blog for you to take in and use as inspiration for your own.

Jennifer designs each of her quilts and, at first glace, tends to lean a bit more traditional with her quilt designs compared to some of the other blogs you will find on this list.

And while the patterns may be a bit more traditional, the colors are bright, fun, even scrappy at times.

In addition to her quilt finishes, she also includes many of her quilting tricks and tips, favorite resources and more on her blog, making it a great blog to keep up with.

Her instagram is also incredibly beautiful and cozy, check her out here @penelopehandmade.

Diary of a Quilter

If you’ve ever searched “Quilts” on Pinterest, it’s likely you’ve come across one of the beautiful quilts of Amy Smart.

She is definitely one of the more well known names in the quilting space as she has been featured more than once in Quilting magazine as well as many other quilting publications, shows, and books.

But while there is no doubt that Amy knows how to design quilts, her tutorials are actually the first link on her website before her pattern shop.

While she loves making quilts, it is very evident in her blog posts that teaching and blogging about quilting are two of her favorite things to do as well.

In fact she has so many free tutorials and projects available on her website that the tutorials section has its own categories to make browsing the free patterns much easier.

You are basically guaranteed to find a project you are dying to start from Amy’s blog Diary of a Quilter. Head on over and check out all the fun things!

Suzy Quilts

No list of modern quilting blogs would be complete without Suzy Quilts.

Suzy creates many different patterns throughout the year for purchase however if you keep an eye out, she often creates tutorials and free patterns for both full size quilts and smaller projects.

I loved her most recent free tutorial for a quilted laptop case using the quilt block she designed for her 2021 patterns Shine and have been eyeing it for when the weather gets a little colder.

Suzy was a graphic designer before turning full time quilter and she uses that background to create some of the most interesting, innovative, and popular quilt patterns out there today.

Her patterns really don’t need much of an introduction by me though, their awesomeness speaks for themselves, head on over to Suzy Quilts to check them out here.

Modernly Morgan

Modernly Morgan is a great modern quilting blog to follow you love a little bit of everything. Morgan doesn’t just write about quilting, but food and motherhood as well.

Quilting is definitely her focus though and it shows in her projects and her content. As a fellow lover of star quilts, I’m loving her current quilt along for her Cozy Cabins pattern.

By heading to the tutorials section of her website, you will immediately find many tutorials to learn the basics as well as full quilt patterns available for free!

Fast piecing tutorials, rainbow quilts, what else can a quilter ask for?

Head over to check out Modernly Morgan here.

A Bright Corner

Bright is an understatement.

Andy at A Bright Corner loves color, and knows exactly how to use it to make some seriously beautiful quilt patterns.

I don’t know what it is about sashing and negative space in quilts, but I’m personally drawn to it, and if you are too, you are going to love Andy’s patterns.

She has her tutorials and free patterns sectioned off under the “Tutorials” section of her website and she has tons of them!

Block tutorials, free patterns, quilting books, and quilting inspiration, there isn’t much more you could want in quilting blogs.

You can find A Bright Corner here.
