This pattern is one of my favorite baby quilt patterns, Playful Zag, a large chevron design!

Its super quick and super easy, and comes together in just a couple of hours and makes for a great gift for any baby shower invitation.

If you’re in your early 30’s like me, you know all your friends/siblings/cousins are starting to have babies so its nice to have an easy pattern up your sleeve for each mom to be.

So lets get into it, the easiest pattern you ever did make…

Fabric Requirements

Because the pattern is so large, adjusting the size to make it wider or taller is as easy as adding more blocks in one direction or the other.

For this pattern though we’ll just focus on the baby size above.

1/4 yard colored fabric FOR EACH stripe
1 yard background fabric
1/2 yard binding
1 yard backing

If you want two stripes that are the same fabric as mine is above, get 1/2 yard of that fabric, or if you want three different color stripes, get 1/4 yard of each fabric.

Beginner Friendly Quilt Pattern

This is literally such a great beginner friendly quilt.

It’s 100% half square triangles and so easy that you can finish the quilt top in only a couple of hours.

A great day project for the advanced quilter looking for a great baby shower gift, and a great weekend project for the super beginner looking for a cute quilt that doesn’t require almost any experience.

When I originally looked at designing a chevron quilt, I was in a rush for a baby shower gift and found no less than 1345 different ways to make a chevron quilt.

I’m pretty sure it was that many, I might have miscounted 😛

I tried out a couple different patterns on paper and didn’t like how they were coming together and eventually settled on a simple HST method.

I used a great 2 at a time method that, if you’ve never done before, is super easy so be sure to check out my tutorial here.

My Favorite Way to Quilt the Playful Zag Quilt

When I made Playful Zag the first time back in the spring I LOVED the simple chevron echo lines I used across the quilt.

When it was done it look SO clean and I was in love with how it came out.

So much so that the few times I’ve made this quilt since, I don’t even question how I’m going to quilt it.

If you do something else with it post it to instagram and tag me! @QuiltingWemple the chevron pattern is so minimalist that there’s endless options to quilt it, I’d love to see what you come up with.

Helpful Notions

straight line quilting using guide

When I made my first quilt in this pattern almost a year ago now, I didn’t have my quilting guide to use on the echo lines, and guys, it was a major pain in the butt to get consistent and straight.

What took me almost 2 weeks to do in the spring literally took me 1 day to do this time.

That was the quilt that convinced me to invest my whole $5 in the quilting guide for my walking foot.

Best $5 I ever spent.

So if you ever need to do straight line quilting, I HIGHLY suggest looking into one. No need to get frustrated over a baby quilt.
