Hello! Today I have exciting news! Today is the release date for my newest quilt pattern “Modern Windows” available now in the quilt shop!

This pattern has been a long time coming and it’s been a wild ride trying to put all the pieces together to get a draft available for purchase!

Through this process I’ve learned a lot, some of it went really well, and some of it was just learning what I don’t know, which is sometimes the hardest part.

So now that Modern Windows is finally available I can relax a bit and take stock of what I learned in the process and adjust things here and there for the next one!

So without further ado let’s talk about this awesome quilt pattern

Already know this is the pattern for you? Check it out at the quilt shop here!

What’s So Special?

If you’ve been hanging around the blog for a bit now, you might remember the original release of this finished quilt almost a whole year ago now.

Beginning of 2020 I was border-line obsessed with the look of a cathedral window quilt, but I quickly realized that a cathedral window quilt was not originally designed to constructed like a typical quilt. There was no batting or binding, and the top just lived on its own as a coverlet.

I don’t know about you but coverlets are not quite common place any more so while I loved the design, I couldn’t get over the fact that I wouldn’t know what to do with a coverlet once I was done with it.

It just didn’t feel like a real quilt to me, and I couldn’t find anything out there that retrofitted the design into a traditional quilt.

So I decided to figure it out myself! Batting, backing, binding and all and now it’s available for you as well!

So if you have also been loving this quilt style and couldn’t justify making one because it wasn’t a “real quilt”, this is definitely the pattern for you!

Precut Friendly Pattern

For this version I really wanted a variety of patterns in the windows, and the most economical way to get as many fabric patterns as possible was precut packs!

Instead of paying $100+ dollars just to get two or three windows out of a quarter yard, this pattern uses charm and mini charm packs.

And when I went to my favorite online fabric shop Fat Quarter Shop and picked up my charm packs, I only spent $30 instead of $100+!

I LOVE their variety of curated fabric collections, instead of scrolling on Pinterest all day I usually get lost scrolling through their fabric collections. There’s that many to choose from and they add to them regularly so it’s hard not to!

If you are looking for the perfect fabric collection for this quilt, I highly suggest Fat Quarter Shop, you will not be disappointed!

Fabric Requirements

I already mentioned the precuts, however what no one tells you about a cathedral window quilt is how much fabric is takes to make!

The aspect that usually draws people in and makes this pattern stand out is that it is very much a 3D quilt.

The windows are essentially appliquéd back to get the window effect but in order to make the block, you have to fold the fabric, very similarly to how you made those paper fortune tellers as a kid.

The blocks start off around 10” and get folded down to only 4.5”.

That’s a lot of fabric. 10 yards (of just background fabric) to be exact. All for a 4.5” block. Oh the things we do for quilts.

You should have seen the woman at the checkout counter when I asked for 10 yards of white and she had to go get a second bolt…

My biggest ProTip for this pattern

In working on this design, it’s very apparent that this was left as a coverlet intentionally because in folding the fabric, it works up a good amount of fabric bulk.

Not quite the warmth level of a quilt, but it’ll definitely be thicker than your average quilt top.

My biggest suggestion when making this pattern is to evaluate how thick/heavy you really want the finished quilt to be.

If you live in Florida, or Australia, you might not want to use a traditional batting for this quilt, you may want to opt for something thinner like a flannel layer in place of the batting layer.

I used a traditional cotton batting in my original one and found that it’s very well suited to the cold winters of upstate NY, but it’s definitely a heavy duty and will not be practical for use during the summer time.

So when you go to make your quilt just keep your location in mind and choose your batting wisely!

Modern Windows is Now Available!

I’ve been working on this pattern for a handful of months now and a lot of people have reached out over the last year interested in a written pattern for this so I’m super excited to finally be able to offer the pattern for purchase!

So if you’ve been looking for a change up in your typical quilting projects and want to try the 3D block, or love a cathedral window but avoided them because of the coverlet aspect, look no further, this pattern is exactly what you are looking for.

Modern Windows is available now in the shop so be sure to head over and grab your copy!
