Hi All! Today I have another quilt reveal for you! This one is a minimalist hourglass baby quilt.
Great Quilt Pattern for Beginners
This quilt was my very first quilt I ever attempted. First block, first everything. So if you are a first time quilter wanting something easy to learn the process, you’ve found what you are looking for.
Because it was my first quilt I didn’t want to spend too much time stressing over color choices so I decided to go with classic solids and spend more time focusing on the process, not the end product.
Although it came out super cute anyway for my first quilt!
Minimalist Hourglass Baby Quilt
I had seen something similar online with no pattern to purchase and I loved the simplicity of the minimalism in it.
Up to that point I hadn’t even made a quilt much less designed one so going with something easy and forgiving like this pattern made learning the basics much easier to focus on.
By haphazardly trying to recreate the one I had seen, I ended up accidentally developing my own quilt pattern.
First Time Free Motion Quilting
The quilting part is what drew me to quilting in the first place. Sewing has been a hobby I didn’t realize I had for many years now, but the quilting phase seemed so creative to me that I knew I wanted to develop the skills to quilt my own quilts.
Because this was my first quilt and I was winging each phase with minimal guidance, I did not get creative with any quilting on this quilt.
I just did a basic stipple all over quilting pattern, and did my first attempt at a dot to dot quilting in the hourglass blocks.
How’d My First Quilt Go?
Learned many things along the way, like the fact that my sewing machine simply didn’t want to quilt. In the first block of the quilting, a piece broke inside, and it seized up on me!
I had to go out and buy a new sewing machine just to finish my quilt!
It was a hand-me-down 10 year old sewing machine any way. It served its purpose. It was time I bought a new one.
I guess it worked out in my favor because it was a basic Singer sewing machine that was designed for the beginner sewer (not quilter).
The feed dogs could not be lowered because it was so basic so I was ghetto rigging the feed dogs by covering them with duct tape to be able to do the free motion quilting! Haha
All in All
I loved this quilt design when I saw it originally and wanted to make my own spin on it. It was a great pattern to use as my first quilt and definitely gave me a lot of confidence in being able to actually produce a nice quilt.
If you are looking for a new project or just starting out yourself I highly recommend this pattern.
As a beginner myself it only took me two days (of had-nothing-else-to-do-all-day-but-quilt) kind of days to put the quilt top together.
I was also working through developing the design and had to redo a couple of steps so it would probably take you even less time to complete it than me!
So if you are looking for a super easy pattern to get your feet wet with quilting for this first time, look no further. Check out my etsy shop here for all the details!
