Today I have a FREE chevron baby quilt pattern for you!
2021 is official the year of additions to my free pattern vault I’m working on adding tons of great easy beginner projects to it and this one is my latest!
I had some great feedback about my chevron quilt pattern that I completed last year so I figured I’d add a baby quilt version of it to the vault.
So check out the finished quilt in this post and if you like it be sure to check out the free pattern in the vault!
Beginner friendly quilt pattern
This is literally such a great beginner friendly quilt.
It’s 100% half square triangles and so easy that you can finish the quilt top in only a couple of hours.
A great day project for the advanced quilter looking for a great baby shower gift, and a great weekend project for the super beginner looking for a cute quilt that doesn’t require almost any experience.
When I originally looked at designing a chevron quilt, I was in a rush for a baby shower gift and found no less than 1345 different ways to make a chevron quilt.
I’m pretty sure it was that many, I might have miscounted 😛
I tried out a couple different patterns on paper and didn’t like how they were coming together and eventually settled on a simple HST method.
I used a great 2 at a time method that, if you’ve never done before, is super easy so be sure to check out my tutorial here.
I finished all the cutting and blocks for this quilt in about 3 hours, that may have also included some time for karaoke in the background while I worked.
So a very not rushed or efficient 3 hours.
Just right for a great quick project.
Quilt Size
This pattern is for a great little baby quilt small enough for the car or for ground cover to play on.
I’m told by friends with babies that you can never have enough baby blankets. And I love a quick project so bring them on!
This one is a 30”x36” quilt, so it’s not quite square.
The nice thing about the pattern is that the chevron stripe is so large that you can easily just add rows in either direction without changing the dimensions of the actual blocks to get a bigger size quilt.
Fabrics from this quilt
My last chevron quilt was a cute earthy tone color that you can check out here.
But this one I wanted to be a bit more girly without being pink.
I’ve been leaning towards pinks a lot lately and I don’t know why, I’m not even a huge fan of the color pink.
So basically I walked into the quilt fabric store and I used one of my favorite methods for picking quilt fabrics.
I brought my husband and told him to pick out the main fabric.

I kind of guided him in a direction when it came to scale of print I was hoping for and he settled on this cute floral print in navy and coral.
After that we picked out the ombre that felt like it was in the same color family as the floral. I wanted the floral to stand out and something a little more subtle for the other two stripes.
From there the low volume background was easy.
Once everything was all assembled I couldn’t help but notice this turned into one of my louder quilts. So for a backing I wanted to tone everything down a bit and just went with a solid light Kona cotton grey.
So if you like the colors I used above here’s a quick list of the fabrics I used!
- Ombre Fairy Dust in Nantucket – Moda Fabrics
- Lou Lou – Robert Kaufman
- Japanese Garden – Andover Fabrics
- Painted Meadow Coral – Moda Fabrics – Binding
- Iron – Kona Cotton – Backing
Machine Quilting
When I made this quilt the first time back in the spring I LOVED the simple chevron echo lines I used across the quilt.
When it was done it look SO clean and I was in love with how it came out.
So I decided to do the same on this baby quilt as well.
Except when I did the one in the spring I didn’t have my quilting guide to use on the lines and guys, it was a major pain in the butt to get consistent and straight.

That was the quilt that convinced me to invest my whole $5 in the quilting guide for my walking foot.
What took me almost 2 weeks to do in the spring literally took me 1 day to do this time.
Best $5 I ever spent.
So if you ever need to do straight line quilting, I highly suggest looking into one. No need to get frustrated over a baby quilt.

How to Make Your Own
This chevron baby quilt pattern was a great quick and easy project even for the most beginning of beginners so if you like it be sure to head over to the vault and check out the very free pattern!
I like this pattern so much I’ll likely add additional sizes to the pattern over the next few months.
I just love how clean the pattern is.
Modern but still classic.
