Good Morning! Today’s post is for the new Chevron Baby Quilt I’ve been working on recently. Hope you like it!

Chevron Baby Quilt

The Chevron Baby Quilt Design

So when I found out my boss was having a surprise baby shower thrown for her, I obviously got straight to work on a baby quilt for her.

I only had about two and a half weeks top to bottom to design, shop, and finish the quilt so i needed a quick and easy design.

So I decided to go with a large chevron pattern.

As I started researching different blocks to use to make a chevron pattern, I decided to go with a simple half square triangle chevron.

I liked the angle of the points, and other methods would cut off portions of the chevron on the top and bottom of the quilt.

Not to mention there are so many super fun half square triangle quilting techniques in the world that I wanted to give a try.

The Colors

I didn’t have a whole lot of time to play around with fabric combinations so I decided on a couple of different solids.

I was going to go pink because she was having a girl, but not all girls love hot pink forever (me and my other two sisters any way), so I decided to go a more gender neutral color pallet.

Greens and yellows, more earthy neutrals than baby colors, I know, but baby’s don’t stay baby’s forever and quilts last decades. I wanted something they would (hopefully) still like at 10 years old and 20 years old.

I did bring my husband to the fabric store and he had a ball picking out the colors (actually though, thats not a joke, the women there LOVED him).

We settled on a cute low volume white background with gold stars, and a flannel tan houndstooth backing to go with the solids.

The Quilting

I had in my head this cute elaborate free motion quilting design, bits and pieces pulled from inspiration all over pinterest.

And then I ran out of time because we’ve been trying to renovate some stuff around the house at the same time.

“Done” needed to be prioritized over “Ideal”. This time I had a deadline.

So I decided to go with a consistent zigzag line that echoed the chevron pattern and the more I went with it, the more I loved it.

I’m actually really glad I didn’t try to go over the top with it.

I love the consistent texture it gave to the simple design of the quilt, it made it look way more orderly and professional and if I could go back I’d make the same decision again.

Although I did not have the tools on hand to do this method quickly so I did it the hard way. I didn’t yet own a quilting guide for my walking foot.

I just haven’t needed one yet so I never thought to buy one. Now that I needed one I didn’t have time to get one.

Even worse, I’ve never marked out quilting before this, and had no tools to do that either, so I ghetto rigged chevron echos using painters tape and just followed the line of the tape on the quilt.

Took ten times longer. But worked like a charm. Still came out awesome and no one will ever know the difference. Certainly not the newborn…

Needless to say I went out and bought this walking foot quilting kit as soon as I finished and hopefully it’ll come in handy on other quilts in the future.

Chevron Baby Quilt Love

This quilt came out super adorable and will be great for any new baby coming into your life. It only took me two evenings to put the quilt top together so its totally doable as a gift idea.

This chevron baby quilt pattern is fantastic for the beginner quilter learning how to quilt because it takes one quilting technique and makes a single quilt of it.

Chevron Baby Quilt

It gives you a great opportunity to learn the technique and really master it quickly because you don’t have to focus on any other piecing techniques for this quilt.

It was fun and quick and came out beautiful.
