If you are putting all of your time, effort, and money into making a quilt, you shouldn’t have to settle for less than perfect fabric sections for the project.
And while box stores like Joann’s are definitely convenient, they don’t usually have the newest fabric collections, widest variety, or carry the highest quality name brands.
So where’s a quilter to go to get the perfect fabric? Today I’m sharing some of my favorite and best Etsy fabric shops to go to when I want to perfect fabrics for my next project.
Best Etsy Shops for Fabric by the Yard
Spoonflower
One of the largest Etsy fabric shops you’ll find out there, Spoonflower makes their own custom printed fabrics (and wallpaper!) that will undoubtedly give your sewing and quilting projects a wow factor.
Spoonflower’s designers take fabric to a new level with the amount of detail and variety in their designs.
And with over 39 pages of just “Top Sellers” you are guaranteed to find a unique fabric perfect for your project that you won’t find anywhere else.

Handmade is Heartmade
when I was tracing back through my Etsy orders for this post, I quickly realized Handmade is Heartmade is hands down the most common place I end up when it comes to buying fabric on Etsy.
With one of the widest varieties of newer release fabrics, they also seem to be the ones that hold on to them the longest.
If you’ve seen my most recent finish of a double wedding ring, you may recognize the fabric collection Cider from Moda. When I started this project, most places were sold out of Cider yardage so I wasn’t able to get a backing fabric in the collection.
But not Handmade is Heartmade. They still had just the fabric I was looking for and were able to get me the yardage I needed to make the project perfect.
It’s not difficult to see why they have such a large following on instagram. If you are in need of fabric yardage, new or a few seasons past, this is the place to go.

Sugar Owl Design Fabric
Sugar Owl Design Fabric is the place to go when you need the basics. High quality solids, or low volume designs.
It’s also the number one place I go when I need my go to binding fabric: the classic black and white stripe.
If you’ve seen my finished Modern Windows quilt, you’ll know what I’m talking about.
A classic black and white stripe is hands down one of the cutest ways to finish a quilt. It gives the quilt a little feel of whimsy and light-heartedness, but I often find that the fabric is difficult to get hold of!
Sugar Owl Design Fabrics has countless classic low volume prints like stripes and polka dots in almost every color under the sun.
If basic solids and low volume prints are what is on your shopping list, Sugar Owl Design Fabrics is the place to go.

Materialgirlchic
Bring in the Tula Pink fabrics!
Materialgirlchic, also known as Fabric Square Shop & Company, easily has one of the brightest Etsy shops I’ve seen in the best way possible.
Tula Pink, Moda, Riley Blake, Ruby Star Society, and TONS monre. If you want it, it’s probably in their store of over 3000 different listings.
And if you can’t wait for that new collection to come out, you can actually preorder through materialgirlchic and be the first with a finished project in that new fabric.

Best Etsy Shops for Fabric Precuts and Bundles
Fat Quarter Shop
Okay so this one isn’t an etsy store, but if you are looking for fabric precuts and bundles, there is literally no better place.
Fat Quarter Shop specializes in anything precuts, but also offers yardarge of almost any fabric that you find in their bundles.
If you’ve seen our post How to Never Regret Your Fabric Color Combinations, you may remember one of the easiest ways to choose fabric is to let someone else curate a precut bundle for you!
With over 40 pages of curated precut fabric bundles (in just the fat quarter section alone) Fat Quarter Shop is the place to go to browse, get ideas, and find the perfect collection.
Fat Quarter Shop is my all time favorite online fabric shop, so head there now for some great ideas for your next project.
Paulitransfers
One of the best ways to pack a punch of color without breaking the bank on new release fabrics, is to use charm pack and mini charm packs and pair it with a coordinating cheaper solid color (our go to is white).

Paulitrasfers offers over 300 different options of charm pack and mini charm packs in addition to many other precut fabric sizes that will allow you use the fancy newest collections without feeling like you are going broke on fabric.

Starlit Quilts is the place to go for the greatest variety of types of fabric all in one place.
Tons of precuts, themed fabrics, yardage, patterns, kits, and more.
A jack of all trades shop with just under 2000 different fabric listings, you’ll be sure to find the perfect fit.

Beccas Quilt Shoppe
At Becca’s Quilt Shoppe, all the big names are here:

More often than not you’ll see listings on etsy for a specific precut for a collection, and that shop may not have any other type of precut in that collection.
Or worse you have to dig through their listings to find other precuts of that collection.
At Becca’s Quilt Shoppe, each collection is a single listing where you can change a drop down in the listing to indicate which type of precut you want in that collection. An incredibly convenient way to do it for the quilter on the go.

Best Etsy Shops for Hand-dyed Fabric
Spindlecitydyeworks
Where StitchinDye (on the list next) typically sticks to one color family for its bundles, SpindleCityDyeworks creates their fabric bundles with curated color palettes.
Spindlecitydyeworks generally sticks to darker color palettes, but no doubt the second you start browsing their selection, you’ll be adding something to your cart.
And if you are feeling like trying fabric dying (or just regular tie dying) on your own you can even find fun dye kits in their store as well!

Stitchindye
A Stitch in Dye makes me want to learn how to hand dye fabric. There. I said it.
I always thought hand dying was an all over color, but at the Etsy shop StitchinDye, you can also get hand-dyed fabrics with patterns in them!
Regardless of whether you want bright tones or calm tones, you can find them here and with over 4,000 5-star ratings, StitchinDye will be your new favorite.

HandDyedByMaureen
Handdyedbymaureen is one of the smaller stores on this list with only a handful of offerings, but her hand-dyed fabrics are just so pretty.
Offering different sized bundles with super pretty gradients, if you want that popular ombre look with a super genuine feel of hand-dyed fabrics, Handdyedbymaureen would be a great place to look.

Bluebridgedyeworks
BlueBridgeDyeworks not only offers bundles of gradient solids, but also offers hand-dyed batiks!
I’ve never been a huge fan of batiks, but this one in pink has me thinking differently.
They also offer tie-dyed cotton for quilting use as well so if you like a little tie dyed wildness in your quilt this is the place to go.

Best Etsy Shops for Vintage Fabrics
LostMineGoods
Lost Mine Goods is not just a fabric store but an all around vintage shop on Etsy.
That being said their category containing strictly vintage fabric is one of it largest categories in the shop and definitely has a lot to look at.
Without going through each listing individually, the bulk of their selection comes anywhere from the 1940’s to the 1980’s and is a mix of florals, fun prints, and 80’s craziness.
These fabrics are true to their vintage name, not reprints, so they are fabric remnants that were thrifted and made available through Etsy and are not on bolts available as yardage.
Lost Mine Goods offers the remnants they have as a whole for purchase and details the dimensions in each listing, so be sure to double check before buying.

KidsNextDoorFabrics
This one is a fun one 🙂 specializing in vintage kid’s fabrics, at Kids Next Door Fabrics you’ll find endless prints that even today young kids would love.
Vintage kids fabrics are awesome because they have so much detail in them! Kids will love sitting and pointing out each little character as they find a new type of dress or a hidden animal in the prints. Almost like their own Where’s Waldo game in quilt form!
Most if not all listings come in 1/2 yard increments for you to be able to purchase the best fit for your project.
Dolls, dresses, cowboys, zoos, as well as coordinating vintage remnant bundles, there’s a lot of great stuff happening at KidsNextDoorFabrics that will bring some amazing vintage vibes to your next project.

JaneDoesVintage
I mispronounced it when I read it too, Jane Doe’s Vintage is the largest vintage fabric store on our list at over 350 listings of mostly fabrics with a handful of vintage pattern’s thrown in for good measure.
Vintage can sometimes take the form of unorganized because its difficult to bucket vintage things together, but at Jane Doe’s Vintage, they’ve done a fantastic job of organizing the store by decade so you know exactly where you want to go.
Offering full remnants as well, each listing has the dimensions of the remnant in the description so be sure to be aware if you find something you like!
Jane Doe’s Vintage offers vintage fabrics between the 1940s and the 1990’s so you are going to find a lot of variety and a lot of different color palettes at this one!

A quick word to the wise when looking at vintage fabrics, just because it’s a vintage fabric does not necessarily make it a quilting fabric so be sure to ask a store what the specific fabric is like before purchasing to make sure you don’t end up with a stretchy fabric made for dresses when you expected cotton!
RunningStitchGoods
Last but not least, the vintage fabric store RunningStitchGoods.
Over 200 different fabrics, mostly originating from the 70’s to 90’s, you are sure to get a flashback of bell bottoms and disco dancing at this shop.
I’m loving this vintage geometric pattern they have from the 80’s!
Offering most fabrics in 1/2” increments you have a bit of wiggle room here to only get what need as opposed to having to buy a whole remnant.
If you have an older quilt top that needs finishing that either a parent or grandparent started from the 1990’s and can’t quite find the same fabrics they used, this might just be the store to check.
Categorizing fabrics by subject type, holidays, abstract, botanical, animals, and more, you’ll be able to easily figure out if they have what you are looking for.

The importance of fabric to a sewing project
While a pattern gets you excited to start a project, the fabric selection is what really keeps you engaged and motivated to finish the quilt top.
When your fabrics are perfectly selected, whatever that might mean to you, it is just so much fun to watch them all play off each other to create a beautiful product.
But if you start with fabrics that you are less than excited about, or settled on because you couldn’t find exactly what you were looking for, it’s not uncommon to end up with parts of an unfinished project because you just aren’t loving the way its coming together.
You end up losing motivation because you don’t love the direction it’s heading in, so you put it down half finished and move on to the next one.
Starting off with your perfect fabrics is my number one tip to avoiding unfinished projects, and by far, Etsy is one of the best places to start off on the best foot.
What makes the best online fabric stores?
The things that define a good online fabric shop are the same things that you look for in an in-person fabric shop:
- A large variety of fabrics
- Newest collections available
- Fabrics are of good quality that won’t bleed or unravel.
When it comes to the best Etsy fabric shops though, the best are the ones that have a large variety of a specific type of fabric like those we’ve highlighted earlier.
For example, if you are looking for a hand-dyed fabric, the best Etsy fabric store will have a large variety of just high quality hand-dyed fabrics.
By specializing and offering more within a niched fabric selection, us quilters know exactly where to go for the best variety of hand-dyed fabrics.
That is one of the down side to brick and mortar stores. They have to incorporate so many different styles of fabric that it is difficult to stock a large amount of any one type of fabric.
By using Etsy stores you can find many places that specialize in the perfect type of fabric for your project, and easily check out from all of them in one easy transaction.
