Good morning! It’s not even 8am in New York as I’m writing this but I needed to share my newest quilt the More Than Stars quilt pattern using this great Disney quilt theme!

AND the newest addition to my free pattern vault of baby quilt patterns!

Its officially January 2021 and one of my new years resolutions is to add like crazy to my baby quilt free pattern vault this year.

So January 21st, here we go, the first addition of the year, and I have another one coming up next month right behind it!

This one is a super easy and quick sawtooth star quilt pattern that is a great weekend project to keep you busy during those quarantine periods.

Or if you just naturally social distance even before COVID and are happy staying at home away from people forever like me.

No Shame.

The Quilty Story

Right after Christmas, my college roommate gets in touch and tells me that she’s expecting a baby!

Naturally I know exactly what I’m going to give her for a gift, and so I worked quick to put together this cute little pattern for her.

I don’t usually lean towards themed quilts, the frozens, tonka trucks, etc. I want my quilts to be something that are used forever, not something that will be grown out of in a year or two.

So with that being said, this is likely the only quilt you will ever see a character fabric in. My college roommate is a Disney fanatic, so I knew this would be a Disney quilt through and through.

So when I found this great Winnie the Pooh fabric, it screamed out to me as the perfect choice for this quilt!

Fast and Easy Pattern

This is a great pattern to practice some quick piece flying geese tricks which means the blocks come together very quickly!

There’s only 16 blocks in the baby quilt so its super quick and you’ll be making them left and right for any baby shower you get invited to.

The pattern is FREE!

This pattern is part of my mission to add allll the baby quilts to my free pattern vault.

The vault is still in the early stages of development with only a handful of patterns so I’m excited to have a pattern pipeline that I’m excited about to add to it.

I love when I finish developing a plan for a quilt and I get antsy to start it. When the fabric finally shows up in the mail, it’s like a whirlwind to start and all of a sudden it’s done. I’m hoping that means its a good pattern that you guys like too!

Get Your Disney Quilt On

My college roommate is a HUGE Disney fan, her dogs are named Elsa and Flynn from Frozen and Tangled, so I knew whatever they ended up doing with the nursery was going to be Disney related.

I knew a Disney quilt theme was a must, I just had to get a little creative to keep myself excited about it since character theme quilts are not my typical go-to.

Classic Winnie the Pooh seemed to be the perfect solution. I found this super cute classic Winnie the Pooh fabric that is more the hand-drawn book version as opposed to the commercialized Winnie the Pooh.

I love how timeless the classic book Winnie the Pooh is, and once I started picking out the other fabrics around it, I quickly got excited about how cute this scheme is!

I used the character fabric as a jumping off point and then pulled some of the colors out of the Pooh fabric to choose the other fabrics in the quilt.

Somehow all of them ended up being honeycomb fabrics, because obviously, where there’s Winnie the Pooh, there’s got to be honey.

When I do baby quilts, I always like using a flannel for the backing. I love how soft flannels are and when I think of babies I think soft.

So for this quilt, I used a simple white and black minimal plaid flannel for the backing.

I liked the blue honeycomb fabric so much I decided to use it for the binding as well.

I got all of the fabrics for this quilt from my favorite online fabric shop, so if you want any of them for your next quilt, they are all listed out below!

Busy Days – Camelot Designs
Red Honey – Riley Blake Designs
Midnight Rose Blue Honeycomb – Riley Blake Designs
Spring Shimmer Metallic Vintage Honeycomb – Robert Kaufman
White – Robert Kaufman

Super Simple Quilting

I’m a pro at over quilting things, and when you over quilt things, the quilts tend to get a bit stiff and take longer to soften up.

So I decided to take a minimalist approach with the quilting on this one to try and keep it nice and soft for the baby, and I just stitched in the ditched around each of the patches in the stars.

I love the effect of stitching in the ditch to quilt a quilt, and that it makes your quilt patches really pop and shows off the piecing of each block.

Not to mention adds just enough quilting to be nice and comfy for the new baby.

I’m loving this new baby quilt pattern More Than Stars, and can’t get over how cute the Disney quilt theme turned out. So if you want to try this one out for yourself be sure to head on over to the free pattern vault and check it out!
